Vehicle Wraps vs Magnetic Signs vs Vinyl Lettering: Which Suits Your Work Vehicle?

July 31, 2026

There are three common ways to put your name on a work vehicle in Adelaide: a full wrap, magnetic signs, or vinyl lettering. They cost different amounts, last for different lengths of time, and some come off the vehicle while others stay put. If you want the vehicle seen from across a car park, vehicle wraps in Adelaide do the most work. If you want something cheap you can pull off on the weekend, magnets are the go. Lettering sits in the middle.

We do all three at our Para Hills workshop, on everything from one tradie’s ute to a whole branded fleet. Here is the plain version of how they compare, so the car signage in Adelaide you pay for suits the way you use the vehicle.

Vehicle wraps: covering the whole vehicle

A vehicle wrap is printed vinyl applied over the panels, either partial across the doors and rear, or a full cover over the whole body. Because it is printed, you can put anything on it, from a simple two-colour logo to a full photographic design. That is why businesses reach for a wrap when they want to be impossible to miss on the road.

The vinyl also protects the paint underneath from stone chips and sun, which helps if the vehicle is leased or you plan to sell it down the track. A good wrap lasts a few years outdoors if you look after it, and we can take it off without wrecking the paint when your branding changes.

Two things to keep in mind. A wrap costs more than the other two options, and the finish comes down to who installs it, because the vinyl has to sit flat around handles, mirrors and body lines. Our post on what a wrap can do for your business explains why vehicle wraps in Adelaide tend to pay for themselves.

Magnetic signs: on when you want, off when you don’t

Magnetic signs are printed panels with a magnetic backing that stick to the steel body and lift straight off. They are the cheapest way to brand a vehicle, and the handy part is you can take them off. Badge the doors for work, pull them off for the weekend, or move the same panels between two utes. A couple of catches. They only hold on steel, so they are out if your doors are aluminium or plastic, and you need to lift them every so often to clean off the dirt and moisture that collects behind them. If you are just starting out, or you only brand the vehicle now and then, magnets are an easy place to begin.

Vinyl lettering: clean and mid-priced

Vinyl cut lettering is your name, number and logo cut from coloured vinyl and stuck straight onto the paint. There is no printed background, just the letters, which gives a clean, tidy look. It lasts longer than a magnet, costs a fair bit less than a wrap, and goes onto almost any smooth surface, glass included, so you can run the website across the back window and the logo on the doors. The catch is that it only covers where the letters go. It will not hide a scratched panel, and it cannot do full-colour images. If your branding is mostly a strong logo and some text, lettering usually does the job.

So which one do you need?

It comes down to how you use the vehicle. On the road all day and want to be seen everywhere? Get a wrap. Vehicle doubles as the family car, or the branding changes with the job? Go with magnets. After a permanent, professional look built around a clean logo? Lettering is usually enough. A lot of fleets mix it up, with a wrap on the main vehicle and lettering on the rest. Whichever way you go, keep it readable. A big phone number and one short line will beat a busy design nobody can take in at 60km/h.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a vehicle wrap last on Adelaide roads?
A good wrap usually lasts a few years outside, longer if you take care of it. The sun here is hard on vinyl, so park under cover when you can, and wash it by hand rather than running it through a servo brush. When the wrap has had its day, we peel it off without marking the paint.

Magnetic signs or vinyl lettering for a work ute?
It depends on the ute. If it doubles as the family car and has steel doors, magnets let you take the branding off on weekends. If you want something that stays put and works on the back window as well as the doors, go with lettering. Plenty of tradies start with magnets and move up to lettering or a wrap once work picks up.

Will signage damage my paint?
Not when it is put on and taken off properly. Wrap vinyl and cut lettering are made to come off without pulling the paint with them, and a wrap can even protect the paint while it is on. Magnets are fine too, as long as you take them off now and then to clean behind them.
